Chapter 16.

The bus journey from Chiang Mai to the border town of Chiang Khong took me through Chiang Rai. I had stopped the night there and can honestly say the place depressed me. I’m sure there are nice parts. I just didn’t see them. By the time I stepped off the bus I had had enough of anywhere that started with Chiang. Unfortunately, I had the night to wait before I could cross into Laos.

Chiang Khong is not a huge town. Mainly used by tourists to stay a night or two before they jump the border. I had checked into a simple hut. Double bed, side table and an electric fan to blow the warm air around. The bathroom was through the back, no door required. The toilet had obviously been green at some point in its life. Now it had a brownish yellow glow about it.

Sitting on the plastic chair that had been left on the veranda I swung the spare one round and put my feet up. My watch said half five in the pm. The sun had started to drop behind me. I reached down and pulled a bottle of beer and a packet of crisps from the 7/11 bag. The beer was nice and chilled. The crisps were shit. As I lit my pre-rolled joint the sun cast huge shadows of the trees that stretched all the way down to the river.

The mighty Mekong River. I had seen so many war movies over the years that talked about this river and read dozens of books that gave the Mekong as mythical a status as the Nile or the Amazon. Here I was getting ready to cross it into lands unknown. At least unknown to anyone in my family. I felt like Caesar staring across the English Channel not knowing what or who were waiting for me on the other side. I had overheard a few people in Chiang Mai say it was nothing like Thailand. Laos was and still is essentially a Communist state. If a true communist country still exists. Even China is basically just another America but without proper elections or any form of human rights.

I rested the joint on the ashtray and sipped the beer watching fishermen bringing their boats in and tying them to wooden stakes. There was hardly a sound other than a feint din from a far-off bar. It was truly peaceful. After the events of the last year, I needed some peace. Some quiet time. My life had almost evaporated, and I was lucky to be here. Charlie was now in the past. She didn’t need me, and I didn’t need her to survive. I re-lit the joint and inhaled heavily throwing it back after. Looking up I noticed bats flying between the trees searching for insects. I exhaled the smoke and took a long deep breath. I could handle this pace of life. I think it would suit me.

I hadn’t left a letter for Charlotte at the last hotel.
